June 1998 (still)
Following camp, I headed off to Baylor for a week-long "piano camp" (yes, I did). I still have a ton of memories of that week, but one big one was that Mike left a message at my house inviting me along with him, and his aunt and uncle to a Ranger's game. What?!? I found this out when I called home one evening (on a pay phone, I'm sure). I remember that my mom allowed me to use some of the calling card minutes to call him back and politely decline, as I wouldn't be home in time for the game. I'm sure I sulked, and then I called and it was okay - a rain check was set for an evening of Spades when I returned home. Pictured below is that evening. I remember it was the first time I drank coffee. I also teamed up with Mike's uncle, and went nil on my first-ever game of Spades, and beat the snot out of Mike and their friend.
There was one week left in Mike's three-week trip to Texas (the first being church camp, the second being my time at Baylor). We had several run-ins during that last week - planned ones, with lots of accumulated hours of talking - at places like the RAC and a party at my BFF's, aside from church.
And then, it was time for Mike to leave. I dropped him off at his aunt/uncles's apartment the evening before his flight out on Monday. I remember giving him my address - after garnering promises of more frequent communication via snail mail - and wrote it on the back of a receipt. Which I think he still carries in his wallet.
We said our platonic goodbyes, and I went home. He packed, and - the next morning - headed to the airport to catch his flight home.
